About Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are gels made from hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a sugar that our bodies naturally produce, but over time, the face undergoes changes in several key structures. Fat tissue, muscles, and bones lose volume, while the skin loses its elasticity, and hyaluronic acid reserves decrease, leading to accentuated wrinkles and loss of skin tone.

Dermal fillers can be injected into the skin to add volume, offering a versatile solution to achieve various aesthetic goals, such as improving skin quality, eliminating undesirable irregularities like wrinkles, and adjusting facial proportions and symmetry.

 FAQs

  • Most patients tolerate dermal filler treatments well. Many describe a slight pinching or tingling sensation during the injection. To minimize any discomfort, especially in sensitive areas like the lips, a topical anesthetic can be applied to the skin before the treatment.

  • The duration of a dermal filler treatment varies from 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the area being treated. Injection results are typically visible immediately after the procedure. However, the final result may take from 10 to 14 days. During this time, any swelling or bruising should subside.

  • Results from hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers are long-lasting but not permanent. Longevity depends on the product used, the treated area, and the patient's skin type and can range from 6 to 18 months.

  • You can resume your daily activities immediately after the procedure. It is recommended to maintain an upright position for the first 3 to 4 hours following the intervention and sleep with your head elevated for 2 nights to reduce swelling and prevent product displacement. Additionally, it is advised to avoid intense physical activity and limit sun exposure for 24 hours after the treatment.

  • Hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers have a proven track record over the years and are generally well-tolerated by patients. They are considered safe and provide a natural look. Common side effects include mild swelling, bruising, and redness at the injection site. In rare cases, subcutaneous nodules may form, but they are reversible with hyaluronidase, an antidote that degrades hyaluronic acid.

  • Contraindications to dermal filler injections include inflammation, acne, herpes, or any skin infection at the injection site. It is recommended to avoid this treatment in individuals predisposed to hypertrophic scars, those with uncontrolled autoimmune diseases, or individuals with blood clotting disorders. Additionally, pregnancy or breastfeeding is a contraindication.
